First RC Skiff Sold internationally
RC Skiff boat number 021 was sold to Mr David Ilses of Brisbane Austraila. This was the first boat to be sold outside of the UK. David is very keen RC yacht and boat enthusiast and has owned a variety of RC Yachts and boats.
David was delighted with his new RC skiff and emailed to say the following-
Hi, well I just returned from sailing on a 20-30 knot day. Where was the
camera- forgotten.
I arrived at the lake to find club members packing up as it was too windy.
When I showed them the skiff several braved the conditions and stayed to
watch.
On with the storm rig. All impressed with the finish of the hull and
simple rigging. Changed from the standard rig to storm rig in less than 5 minutes.
Oh my god, when I put the sail on and walked to the water the boat
almost was ripped from my hand.
Nobody from the club expected anything to sail in that wind and survive.
In the water and off to a flying tack.
Skiff handled it well, off upwind with no hand on controls, tracked
straight. Full control, easy tacking, sail boom open about an inch or
two off the stern.
Had sail on middle position and some belly in the sail.
Impressed audience of marble and 10 rater spectators already driven to
shore.
Handled big gusts and almost knocked down but skiff kept on going. The
control was there all the time.
Downwind was fast with nose dipping to take a thin sheet of water over
the deck but powering on.
I eventually tried rear mast hole with flatter sail and upwind it was a
walk in the park and dry on deck downwind.
It was only when the wind gusted to 30 knots that I had the nose bury to
the mast but it slowed, recovered and shot off.
I really stayed out too long with the increasing wind but interesting to
know the limits.’
’Never had a fear of not being able to tack, just so responsive.
Skiffs rule - the last on the water when everyone else has retired.
As you can gather I am a convert.’
